The history of Gassin can be traced back to distant times, 900-600BC, well before the Roman occupation. Due to the plain being excessively marshy, the inhabitants were forced to take refuge in the heights close to a water source. The first written mentions of Gassin date back to 1234-35. There is little reliable documentation on Gassin from the 13th, 14th 15th and 16th centuries, when the region was ravaged by the plague and religious wars. In 1868, the village was visited by Prince and President Louis Napoleon. During the 19th century and in the early part of the 20th, there was an abundance of cottage industries such as cork-making, silk worm breeding, charcoal manufacture, carpentry and oil milling. |

Perched on its rocky outcrop, the village had long been fearful of invasion, and was built with a view to defence. Gassin was constructed in terraces so as to follow curves and levels. The houses are high, dense, stacked one on another. Their roofs are of Roman tiles. It is a village steeped in tradition: every year, Gassin welcomes you from April through to August by organising a string of bowls tournaments, challenges and competitions, plus events such as the Polo Masters. |
